CDN and 5G MEC: Mobile Edge Compute Integration
5G Changes CDN
5G's Multi-access Edge Computing (MEC) places compute and storage at the base of cell towers — within the mobile network itself. This is even closer to users than traditional CDN PoPs in colocation facilities. For CDN providers, MEC represents both an opportunity (sub-5ms latency) and a disruption (carriers become edge compute competitors). For foundational context, read CDN Monitoring and Observability: Metrics That Matter — FlyFish NWA.
MEC Architecture
Traditional CDN path:
User → Cell tower → ISP core → Internet → CDN PoP → Internet → Origin
RTT: 20-100ms
MEC-enabled CDN path:
User → Cell tower → MEC server (at tower) → Origin
RTT: 1-5msMEC servers sit within the mobile network, eliminating the round-trip through the internet backbone to a CDN PoP.
| Metric | Edge Processing | Origin Processing | Improvement |
|---|---|---|---|
| Latency (p50) | 8–15 ms | 120–300 ms | 15–20x faster |
| Cache Hit Ratio | 85–95% | N/A | Reduces origin load |
| TLS Handshake | 1–5 ms (nearby PoP) | 50–150 ms | 10–30x faster |
| Bandwidth Cost | $0.01–0.04/GB | $0.05–0.12/GB | 3–5x cheaper |
| Availability | 99.99% (multi-PoP) | 99.9% (single DC) | 10x fewer outages |
CDN + MEC Integration Models
Model 1: CDN Provider Deploys at MEC
CDN providers like Akamai and Cloudflare deploy their software on MEC infrastructure provided by carriers. The CDN controls the software stack; the carrier provides the physical infrastructure.
Model 2: Carrier Operates CDN at MEC
Carriers run their own CDN software at MEC locations. They become CDN providers themselves, potentially competing with traditional CDN vendors.
Model 3: Hybrid
CDN providers and carriers partner: carrier handles MEC infrastructure, CDN provides caching and delivery software, both share revenue from content delivery.
Use Cases for MEC-CDN
- AR/VR content — Augmented reality requires < 20ms latency for responsive overlays. MEC-cached 3D assets enable real-time AR.
- Cloud gaming — Game rendering at MEC locations with 5ms latency to the player. Content and assets cached locally.
- Live video — Ultra-low latency live streaming from MEC locations. Replaces WebRTC for broadcast-scale low-latency video.
- IoT — Industrial IoT devices communicating with MEC-hosted edge functions for real-time processing.
- Autonomous vehicles — HD map tiles and traffic data served from the nearest MEC location.
Challenges
- Fragmented deployment — Each carrier has their own MEC platform (AWS Wavelength, Azure Edge Zones, Google Distributed Cloud Edge)
- Limited coverage — MEC is available only where 5G is deployed (primarily urban areas)
- Small cache capacity — MEC servers have less storage than CDN PoPs, limiting cacheable content
- Multi-carrier complexity — Content must be deployed across multiple carriers' MEC platforms
The Future
As 5G coverage expands and MEC platforms mature, CDN architecture will evolve toward a three-tier model: MEC edge (sub-5ms, limited cache), CDN PoP (10-50ms, large cache), and origin (100ms+, full content). See future of CDN technology.
